Carl,
RE: On Morris "stealing" his thesis that this war scare is domestic politics at its sleaziest.

I wrote something like that last August 1, cf.
Message 17821511
the last paragraph reads:
<<Getting this on the front page at least competes with the economy and the markets and the deficits, dividing
people's attention in a way that is favorable to the GOP. And if, by shaking the tree enough, Saddam
blinks, and concessions, even if slight, are won, they become foreign policy heroes. And if nothing
happens, they haven't lost much except for a few other countries thinking that they are irresponsible loose
cannons (which they already believe anyway, I think), the American left gets in a tizzy and their own
constituents more energized as they have to "save the country" from the dire terrorist threats that the
namby pamby "liberals" would allow. Pretty good way to get them out to vote, even if they don't actually
go to war.>>

If Saddam were really smart (which he isn't, as far as I can see), he would send Tariq Aziz to the UN, saying something like, "Yes, we invaded Iran in the early 80s. We wanted to take Saudi Arabia's place as the leading oil producer to the West, and we were encouraged in our ambition by the CIA of the US. They wanted us to wage war against the Iranians, who they saw as threats. They gave us weapons cheaply, they helped train some of our officers. When things started going badly, they gave us intelligence that helped enormously. They also helped us start our WMD program, which they said would be very useful. When the Kurds tried to use the fact that we were at war with Iran as a way to attain their independence, yes we used it on them as well as the Iranians. Why not? They were both our enemies. The Americans were behind us all the way then. They cheered us in private, they said nothing in public, they kept selling us new WMDs as well as conventional weapons. Actually we would have been much better off with some of their F-16s, but we didn't know that then. These Americans are the most powerful country in the world, true, but they worst traitors in the world, they are not to be trusted by anyone."

Something like that, but more elaborate. If they have any documentation, it could be really powerful.
