Re : economic numbers needing to be "re-centered" -- I have always been amazed at the media's exclamation "highest ever !" (or "high," in the following instance) when quoting a lot of economic statistics.

For example, if I remember correctly ... housing starts reached a level of 2.1 million units (annualized) back around 1971 or 1972 or so.

Every time I hear people "gushing" about the figure now (around 1.6 or 1.7 million or so), I always wonder if anyone out there remembers that there are a lot more people in the U.S. now versus 30 years ago !
