Catholics, LindyBill

Oh, yeah. Dooley had his book, but the big book was "The Ugly American." As I recall, it was turned into a Movie with Marlon Brando. It was the original "Hearts and Minds." Eisenhower loved the book.

The one Million or so Vietnamese who came down to South Vietnam when it was split were Catholics. They took over the Government. Secretary of State Dulles was the son of Missionaries, and was very influenced by the "Christians vs the Godless Commies." He was the reason for our initial foray into supporting South Vietnam. A Religious war went on in the South between the Catholics and the Buddhists. The Irony, of course, is that the North Vietnamese wiped out the Buddhist leaders when they took over. Diem, et al, were much nicer to them.
