I don't know ANYTHING about longshoremen. From what I've gleened from those that do, the profession nowadays consists mostly of crane operators. The longshoremen "shut out" operate the cranes that are the only means to offload the huge shipping containers from the freighters. I doubt there is a non-union alternative. Even if they ship off to Vancouver or try the Canal to offload in Houston, there might be sympathy strikes in those ports.

I've been a longtime advocate of retracting union exemption from the anti-trust acts. Big Labor should not have that kind of monopoly power on industries any more than Big Business, IMHO.
