UK manufacturing output stalls

ananova.com

The Office for National Statistics says UK manufacturing stalled during August after July's sharp rise.

Output levels were unchanged on the previous month.

Analysts had been expecting an increase in the region of 1% during the month.

The ONS adds that the performance would have been worse if buoyant figures for vehicle production had not been included.

All but three of the 13 categories used to monitor manufacturing showed a decline in output and offset the 17.8% rise in vehicle production during the month.

Setting aside the car figure, the ONS says manufacturing output declined 0.7% in August.

The latest data backs up other research which suggests the manufacturing sector is back under the cosh after brief signs of a revival in July.

More recent data for September from the CBI and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply has already pointed to weaker growth.

The latest output figure from the ONS means the three-month trend for manufacturing is down 1.7% on the previous quarter.

Strong falls during that period came in textiles, petrol and fuels, and machinery and equipment output.
