I wonder if Bush knows anything about Islam, really. There were, I seem to recall three very different strains of Islam. I remember one kind that was very mild. In that kind of Islam it was easy to separate the state from the religion, since the real religious kingdom of Islam could not be established until the hidden Imam came back- an event which seemed somewhat analogous to the millennium, when Jesus returns to be king for the Christians who believe in that sort of thing. The Muslims who follow that ideology don't worry so much about what the State does, regarding religion, because no perfect Islamic state is possible until the Imam returns. Anyway, it would behoove the media to explore the different strains of Islam, so that the average American could understand that there ARE tolerant versions of Islam, just as their are tolerant branches of Christianity and Judaism. It would be nice if the tolerance could be stressed, and encouraged- in all these religions.
