Attacker Stabs, Injures Paris Mayor

By Associated Press

October 5, 2002, 10:29 PM EDT

PARIS -- An attacker stabbed Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe in the abdomen Sunday at city hall, where a late-night concert had been organized, firefighters said.

Delanoe, whose life was not in danger, was rushed by ambulance to a Paris hospital, the mayor's office said. His attacker was quickly taken into police custody. The motive was not known.

The mayor's office had organized a night of festivities in Paris, with museums open late, monuments lit up and artists performing throughout the capital. Paris City Hall opened its doors for a concert of lounge music.
