"If the US had imperialistic designs, the world would have been ours for the taking after WWII...."
Which is exactly what happened as far as Europe, Central and South America, and much of the Arab world goes.
Look at the world as it is, not as you want it to be. The dominate culture in the world today is that of the US. This influence throughout the world is massive. The only real long term threat is China. The Arab world is in disarray as usual thanks to religion, India has 14 languages on it's paper money, Africa is in a health crisis of untold dimension. And American industrial globalization puts the American Empire's influence throughout the world where profits can be made. That you, perhaps, define imperialism in a, at best, quaint way doesn't make it valid.

Imperialism is about control, not about conquest. And that is what the war with Iraq is about, control of energy and saving face. Bush can not allow an attack on his family or country without taking a personal action. He has to do what he is doing because any other course of action would be interpreted as a sign of weakness and as such would be detrimental for the empire.

The result of a war with Iraq, who knows? IMO it will lead to more local wars of the same type with a loss of life, property, and precious resources. Whether these losses are justifiable is an open question today. History, usually written by the victors in the near term, will eventually dig out the facts and come to some conclusions. But not in our time.
