We used a .223 for harvesting scion material from trees we identified as having the potential for genetic superiority. The scions were grafted onto root stock and used in a seed orchard to produce superior seedlings for outplanting.

It was a hoot! We would use a Thiokol snow machine and go way up into the Cascades where we could find the noble fir trees that we had previously marked. The best scion material is way up in the top, so we would use the .223 to shoot them off. When it fell to the ground, we'd label it and save it for grafting in the spring.

The woman who managed the tree improvement program for us raised a few eyebrows at the gun store where she bought the ammo. They wondered why such a little gal would want enough .223 ammo to fight a small war.
