You are correct the USD is up against the REAL. But Gold is up against the dollar in the same period. Brazilians would have benefited having gold or USD than REAL but with Gold they would be better than in USD. Now this could change for the better or worse in the future depending on what Gold-USD-Real rates are.

i gotcha..my pea brain was thinking you said the real up against the dollar not the dollar up against the real...but how many brazilians could convert after their accounts were frozen?
but the question really now is how much is gold up against the real?
