For all you know the communists did make the world a better and safer place. They were, in a way, the perfect enemy for us. They were much worse off than we knew, and they spent themselves into destruction keeping up with us. They literally destroyed themselves- what better enemy is there? And you would prefer taking them over with forces, as opposed to letting them destroy themselves? Rather silly, imo. You may be talking about physical danger. But when people are in danger of being wiped out culturally, I think the danger is perceived as very real (and physical) to them. And that is what matters, in terms of understanding.
