You were talking to "expatriates", who are, by definition, the people for which living in a repressive regime was the most difficult. Re: "You just better believe that the most minor every day dispute with a neighbor, a shop keeper, a minor traffic incident, any of the things that life can sometimes be made up of can turn into truly terrifying interactions with the police, and we're not talking about the US judicial system." I go years without any disputes with my neighbors, shop keepers or minor traffic incidents. I wonder what your life is like, that these would be common occurrences. It reminds me of my dating days. Twice I ended up on a date with girls who were stunned to discover that I'd driven the same car for 50,000+ miles without totalling it. They couldn't understand how that could happen. Of course I never let got in a car with them at the wheel, LOL. -- Carl
