Of course, Chip might not have been incorrect, since this
data could have been put into computers and calculated on
that basis going back as far as they have puts and calls
data available.

Speaking of the VIX, intraday spikes today above 48
already, and the patients are still checking into the
hospital. Where will the VIX be when everyone is feeling
like intensive care & life support?

Hi LK2,

Several comments on your post:

1.) The page that you link to contains this quote: "CBOE's Volatility Index, known by its ticker symbol VIX. VIX, introduced by CBOE in 1993"

2.) The data prior to that is back-calculated - i.e. it wasn't available to investors at that time. That may skew its reliability some.

3.) Regardless, you really need to go back to the late 60's / early 70's to see a long-term bear market anyways.
