"Enlightened self- interest" is the way one rationalizes ones value system after the fact. Most internalization occurs during childhood, before one can possibly have a philosophy of the matter. As for guilt and shame, if one cares about things, one feels bad because they come to harm or are disrespected, for example, if one's child is injured or one's spouse is insulted. Ordinarily, one feels anger at the perpetrator. Now, suppose that you have behaved badly, and carelessly caused your child injury or been mean to your spouse. Then your anger is directed at yourself.....
