Tell me, since you've lived there, how do most Frenchmen feel about their pols?

Tous pourris :-)

Seriously, there's a lot of cynicism - the hilarious Guignols de l'Info on Canal+ was one of the more accurate portrayals of ambient thinking that I saw in the media. And some of the stuff one hears a lot about is just not taken seriously, such as Le Pen, most everyone I knew considered him a buffoon more than a threat, despite all the noise.

What really ticks the French off about their politicians is their mishandling and lying about things such as the affair with the contaminated blood from some years back, or of mad cow disease. This much more so than sales of arms to Angola, which don't touch every day life in the same way. And something people have made a pissing big deal about here - Klintoon's BJ in the Oval Office are way down the list in insignificance. Mitterand kept a mistress and an illegitimate daughter at government expense, it was hardly a federal case.
