Taxes are regressive, they are bad medicine for a poor economy. Money taken out of circulation by the government kills productivity. Those dollars enter a black hole called the Treasury where they no longer are used to create demand and produce additional tax revenue... A family will just reallocate money from pizza, movies, etc to the gas tank. Look at the smokers in our society, taxes per pack of cigarettes are pretty steep - I don't see people giving up smoking due to the price... Taxes are bad, the Republicans got that message right. I am happy to pay as much as the government needs to keep the common defense and to administrate justice but the government gets into far more than it should...

A far better way to encourage less demand on foreign oil is to open up the Arctic to American oil companies, encourage alternative fuels by waiving taxes, etc...
