I don't think that AVG, Norton or any antivirus program will scan your e-mail on a web site like Yahoo or Hotmail but -

1 - Yahoo and Hotmail have virus scanners on their servers.

2 - You can download an attachment without opening it and then you any anti-virus scanner on the attachment.

Does AVG cover the web based email's?

Only if you are reading your web based mail through your email program. Some web based mail has been run through a virus scanner before it gets to you but you shouldn't trust that it has been scanned. Always follow good anti virus/trojan procedures and you are very unlikely to get bit.
