It's interesting to me because I spend so much time in LA Harbor and know a lot of the people that are involved in the strike - dockworkers, Maritime folks and union reps.

There's a local watering hole here where people from all three groups tend to gather. Usually these people all get along. I've been listening to the gathering storm for several months now and the discussions for the most part have been cordial. Everyone was aware of the contract deadline in July and everyone was pretty positive that it would be worked out in time to avoid a strike. All of them were all aware and very concerned about how damaging a strike could be - not only to the economy but to them personally.

It's pretty interesting to watch the posturing and body language now. You can pretty much tell who's who and how they fit in the hierarchy by the way they carry themselves.
They are no longer talking to each other - just glaring across the room.

So far, no violence, but it's not a place you want to be.
