When it comes to free trade, the US has found it much easier to preach than to practice.

Come on Steven... Were that the case, the US would not have a trade deficit, would it? We buy more goods from the rest of the world than they buy from us... And it's been that way for years now.

Sure we put tariffs on some products... I'm not saying we're totally a "free trader"... I don't believe in "free trade"... I believe in "fair trade"..

And if we didn't place SOME limitations on foreign goods, we'd be inundated with them and American industries would all but disappear.

If you ever have doubts about how US companies often have difficulty penetrating foreign markets, you should check out T. Boone Pickens on his experiences in Japan:

digital.library.okstate.edu

The Japanese had their economy tied up, until we forced them to open up to US goods. Even if you had something to sell to them, they held a lock on all the distribution outlets and wouldn't carry US goods if it threatened a local business.

The Japanese practiced some MAJOR "economic imperialism" to use Noel's definition, trying to increase their market share of goods such as Autos and Semi-Conductors by subsidizing R&D through MITI.. They almost put the US automakers and Semi Fabs out of business from their dumping..

You DO remember that, don't you??

They way I look at it is that we'll open up our markets if nations open up theirs. If they don't then we provide privileged access to another nation instead.
