I put my hand up as being partially responsible for 9/11. I want wanted cheap airfares, and minimum interference at the airport.

Good point. We always have to make tradeoffs between freedom and safety.

I marvel at the genius that thought of ramming the USS Cole with a dingy filled with explosives, and ramming a 767 full of jet fuel into the WTC. It really doesn't take much to do an enormous amount of damage, if you are clever.

Right now there is a homicidal maniac driving around the DC metro area, killing people, and he is an excellent shot, and very good at hiding.

It's a shame these talents are being used to destroy others. Something got twisted along the way.

But the type of neglect that led to Bhopal was more like entropy. Things decay and you have to keep up with them. If you let down your guard, they break.

I worked at Exxon Refinery in Baton Rouge as a process operator. Every hour I would walk around checking every pump, every furnace, inspecting everything on my unit to make sure that it was all in good working order. Safety was mandatory.

I've worked in a lot of other places where safety was optional.
