if he is mum about his opinions.


Well, I think there may be an inference that this is a teacher who really wants the students to think for themselves. But that's only a potential inference.

I agree that finding a teacher who will grade papers on their quality of research, analysis, and writiing rather than on whether the student comes up with an answer the prof agrees with is difficult. But it's a goal.
