One is genial in order not to be rude.

One is genial because one is genial. Whoops, we've been there and that didn't work. Never mind.

I imagine that people are genial or affable primarily as a matter of temperament, not out of any moral consideration to avoid being rude. If one is just naturally affable, or not, I don't think one can draw any conclusions about the duty to be courteous.

why does one have to be genial in order not to be rude? can't one be neutral?
