Infineon to halt investments on logic fabs
Semiconductor Business News
(10/08/02 02:59 p.m. EST)

MUNICH--Infineon Technologies AG today said it would no longer invest in fabs that produce logic IC products, and instead, will rely more on silicon foundries, according to a report from Reuters.

Ulrich Schumacher, CEO of Infineon, told Reuters that the German chip maker will continue to manufacture its own memory chips, which generate between 25-40% of its sales.

"We won't do any more logic-manufacturing investments. If demand (for logic) becomes higher than our current capacity, we'll go to foundries," Schumacher told Reuters.

Infineon currently outsources between 10-15% of all its IC production, but the company is under pressure to reduce costs. Infineon is closely aligned with several foundries. The company has a joint 300-mm foundry venture in Singapore with United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC).

Hi G,

Great report.

Note margin very similar to exactly 4 years ( to today 10/08/98) ago when last turn in market occurred.

Bob

Any one believe in the four year cycle??
