Do you really think Al Gore could be doing a better job under the circumstances?!

It was 7-2. 5-4 on the remedy only.

Bush won every vote count, official and unofficial, affirmed by the 7-2 USSC decision.

No one wants to admit it publicly but the country reacts negatively to a dumb president who has to be completely scripted because that makes the question of who is running things unavoidable.
Further compounding that suspicion are the disappearing acts of Bunker Dick and Poppy, who can't answer questions extemporaneously without giving themselves away as liars.
(Unlike Rumsfeld, who is a master)
I heard Poppy last week on a rare campaign appearance saying he won't give any interviews and no press conferences from here on out. Too much to lose, obviously.

If Junior shuts up the question fades.
Anytime he talks it comes up again.
Eventually maybe they'll learn to keep him off the podium and quietly loot the planet, and let someone stand up and talk about the economy. They'd get a lot further.
