The limiting factor is the last-mile infrastructure, of course. Same as it ever was.
And the solution involves backhoes and guys with toolboxes. Huge investment, but not basically an electronics problem.

I was thinking real progress was being made with the new wireless technologies.

If I can use my pc and the internet at the local starbucks and misc. hotels, I would think the residential last mile could be chipped away?
