I think one could die willingly knowing that one's offspring survives, particularly if there are not yet grandchildren or if one is old or infirm.

I agree but with the possible exception of those who are infirm or perhaps untreatably depressed I don't think it would qualify as being in one's self interest.

I think its largly a matter of not agreeing on the definition of self interest.
