.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray upgrades Nextel Communications to "outperform" in notes 10/9/02 Analyst William Crawford lifts his rating on the wireless firm from "market perform" and says its Direct Connect technology is the only sustainable differentiator in the wireless voice market. He says Nextel's profitability per subscriber is twice as high as its closest competitor, and predicts Nextel won't face direct competition for its push-to-talk service until mid-2004 at the earliest. Crawford dramatically raises estimates for Nextel. On the other hand, he suggests the company's debt level could pose a longer-term problem. cl.com.com
