I think US-based businesses know perfectly well that we live in a highly interdependent world -- and US business often shows remarkable leadership. But politically we are increasingly isolated and do not appear to understand that we are part of the problems that we blame on others -- it some cases we are our own worst enemy. An isolated US is a weak US -- and in the past year we bungled the communication of our desire to deal with Iraq in a way that now needlessly reinforces our sense of isolation. To me this is political incompetence that we can ill-afford. It is incompetence that will probably be paid for with lost American lives.
