whatever, three quarters ago cisco's margins were

gross - 57.6%
operating - 15.4%
net - 13.8%

all excellent levels compared to any hardware company.

which margins were you calling "terrible"? The ones they used in the cafeteria in lieu of butter....

<Comparing operating margins between companies is like weighing people by measuring their height.>

John, doctors measure a person's fat content by measuring their height and combining that with their weight. Which shows a remarkable lack of scientific precision. An ectomorph can be obese and still within the 'right' height to weight ratio while a mesomorph could be 'fat' but lean and trim and full of muscle. Doctors should use a more meaningful measure than a falsely 'scientific' approach. They should measure total cholesterol or simply look at the person to see whether they are fat.

On the value of companies, the weight of Worldcom, Enron and Global Crossing shows that weighing isn't a good method for determining value.

On the value of electronics, I have a theory that the end value of electronics is the weight of the box. Okay, I know that's not really as accurate as the doctor's fat measuring technique, but it seems to work more or less.

A QUALCOMM radioOne propelled cyberphone would weigh less than one with electronic gizzards, so my theory immediately is shown to be false. But it is a good start.
