My point is that it would be unthinkable for most Europeans (and political suicide for European politicians) for a European politician to side with another country whose actions were not in line with their own, on the grounds of cultural proximity.

Not sure what "in line with their own" means in this context. Point taken that cultural proximity seems to be a low priority in making judgements -- though I get the impression that members of the EU do not slam each other with the freedom they use on America or Israel.
