Let me spell it out:

If we attack Iraq on our own, we can take all of the oil for ourselves. Russia, China, and France have Security Council veto power. If we go through the UN, we have to obtain approval from those other countries. They will demand their oil contracts be honored. Bush & Co. have been desperately trying to avoid going through the UN in attacking Iraq for exactly this reason.
