I don't think sticks do much, and I also think they are overused.

If you think back on your education, or your sons education, what we often remember are the teachers who were kind to us. These people can sometimes get students to work from a basis of affection, when simply trying to convince students they have a duty to learn or that it is right to learn, would not work. I remember the teachers like that in my own life. There were not many of them, but they were transformative. When we talk about slackers, we are talking about people in need of a transformative experience. That is just my opinion, however.
