I don't see any noticeable speed tradeoffs, but there is definitely a security tradeoff.

Right now I can't imagine using a wireless network at the office, solely for security.

Lizzie: re:"How fast is the wireless lan vs. a "standard" Lan from a user perspective- is there any performance tradeoff, anybody know?"

802.11b which is what most people might have today is 11Mb/sec
802.11a (and a/b dual mode platforms which is how most 11a will be brought to market) is 54Mb/sec

Most corporate LANs today are 10/100Mb/s Fast Ethernet.

I have both 10/100 and 11b NIC cards and can use either here in my office. There is only noticeable performance difference in speed when I am downloading some big powerpoint file or synchronizing my e-mail, but the difference is tolerable. However, with my 11b NIC, I can get up and walk into a conference room with my PC and never lose connection.
