The one line I thought summed it all up was the one in bold. I used to leave the house on my bike at 7-8 in the morning and didn't have to be home until it was dark. I lived in a section of LA that was centrally located that allowed me to go downtown to the Grand Central Market and get all the free samples, or up to the Chinese or Pantages theaters in Hollywood, or trek on down to the beach in Santa Monica. Nobody asked me where I was going or when I'd be back. The freedom was wonderful. Can't imagine a kid being allowed that these days.
