I agree for some cases. My father bought a Lexus LS400 in 1990 near the time when they first came out. He sold the car 3 years later for nearly the same price he bought it at because Lexuses became such a valued car in the early 90's.

I bought a new Hyundai Sonata October of last year. Bought it for $500 below invoice and got favorable financing. Comes with a 5/50 bumper to bumper and 10/100 powertrain. This is a car that has been stylishly redesigned and runs 25% cheaper than comparable Camry's or Accords.

I would say the best cars to buy used are domestics or luxury vehicles, SUV's in particular.
