If everyone is screened thoroughly, there is no need to pick others out from the crowd.

BTW, I was just through a few airports and some were
(randomly?) pulled out of line and given closer scrutiny, but that amounted to a redundant procedure.

I did notice a gapping hole in security however. If an individual wanted to smuggle a metal weapon, all s/he would need do is conceal it in their belt buckle or or purse latch. The screener just acknowledges that a belt buckle or such is what it is, a legitimate metal object, but does not look at it in detail to see if it has been used as an object to conceal something.
