As soon as Iraq is certified "disarmed" and everyone moves on, the inspectors leave, and France and Russia get the sanctions lifted, Saddam will rebuild his WMD programs double-time. Remove the source of the trouble and get it over with.

Sounds like a good idea. How do we know in general if any of the ME Arab Muslim countries will do the same. Develop WMD and threaten the USA? This could turn into a very paranoid situation, as if it's not already.

Suffice to say the ME Arabs focus is on Israel and the Palestinian situation. Lessen that crisis and tension drops all round imho.

So I'm still bemused why Bush put out the clampers on Tony Blairs efforts in that direction ???

Even the dullest dullard can comprehend that disarming a regime absolutely bent on possessing WMD is fruitless.

Not necessarily Derek...

You see... Saddam is claiming that he has no WMDs currently.

Should inspectors locate such caches of WMDs in Iraq, it will, in effect, catch Saddam in a lie and prove that he cannot be trusted.

Upon such a discovery, we'll either have a casus belli for executing his direct overthrow, or for exerting even more restrictive measures.

Either way, Saddam will be placed in a VERY uncomfortable situation in which he will NOT be permitted to save face by obstructing or harassing the inspectors.
