Re: "Containment is an outdated Cold War type of mentality. It does not apply post 9/11"

Please do say why. It may appear obvious to you, but it just is not so clear to those of us who have lived with terrorism pretty much all their lives - oh, but terrorists were called "freedom fighters" then, of course :)

I am sorry that America also had to see for itself just what a horrible affliction terrorism is. Still, the US is not the first country to suffer terrorism, nor will it be the last. I sure wish that America would handle the post-9/11 period a little differently, but I guess we all need revenge, and when you are the sole superpower, you might go to extremes.

> Containment of terrorism will not work

You might be confusing issues here - we are talking about confinement of Saddam, who, to the best of my knowledge, has not been implicated in any terrorist attack in the past decade. I was under the impression that the current US administration urged everyone to attack Saddam, not because he is a terrorist or support terrorism, but on grounds that he has an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction.

Actually, your phrase can and often has been stated as "War on terrorists do not work", as this is a lesson countries have learned through bitter experience against terrorism in their own soil. The reason is simple: terrorists, by definition, have no fixed place, and seldom any known identity. So terrorism cannot be fought by carpet-bombing a country, at least in no humane way, however you care to define the word. Guerrilla attacks need to be countered by similar tactics.

The US has Marines, CIA, etc... Why not put to work all these superbly trained marines and agents, to go in and engage in singular combat against the terrorist cells? Why bomb civilians from the air? How is this human?
