Have you followed the Oriana Fallaci trial

Read your posts. Understand your anger. I find I understand the French less and less.

I live (practically) in France, and can say that there is very little media coverage on this trial.

I looked it up after reading about it here. Here are some ideas as to why the French might be trying to ban "Rage and Pride", the book in question:

One plaintiff, the anti-racist group MRAP, wants the book banned from France altogether. Two others, including the Human Rights League, simply want disclaimers that its disparaging passages on Islam don't accurately reflect the Muslim religion.

In her book -- a best-seller in Italy and Spain -- Fallaci characterized Muslims as "vile creatures, who urinate in baptistries" and "multiply like rats."

The charges arise from comments quoted in the magazine Lire that Islam is "the most stupid religion"

I cannot approve of any book being banned, for I believe in freedom of expression. Nevertheless, I can certainly symphathise with believers of Islam whose religion is being called "stupid" (hardly an intellectual assessment worthy of a literary author, if you ask me) and who are practically insulted ("vile creatures"???) by this author. It would not be unnatural if he was sued for his shirt if this took place in the US, right?

As I mentioned, the Oriana F. thing is another mountain out of a molehill, the MRAP loves to get publicity for themselves with these stupid lawsuits of theirs. In any case, the French translation of her book was quickly put online, not a hell of a lot that the MRAP can do about that at this point (other than the satisfaction of denying whatever copyright royalties the author may have gained, obviously one of their hidden goals.)

Some people like Le Pen know how to work that system and use the noise created by the likes of le MRAP to get free publicity, generally any attempts to censor backfire one way or another (unless you're the Scientologists or Reverend Moon with infinite money extorted from gullible members to pay teams of lawyers.)

Enfin bref, not really worth getting worked up over.
