This guy doesn't know much independently on the topic, but he's usually pretty good at presenting fairly the consensus of those who do. You might want to check out this piece and follow up some of the footnotes as a start:

On the oil argument, keep in mind that not just the US but Japan and Europe, our major trading partners, need Middle Eastern oil.

I posted earlier about the possibility of biodiesel, which is made from vegetable oil, with the glycerine removed. Finally a use for GM corn!

And, down the road, maybe fuel cells.
