I'm glad you mentioned Helter Skelter. That's a good example of why I don't think this guy's primarily political. Manson's people wrote messages in blood on the wall, to try to make people believe it was done by black people (consistent with their goal of touching off a race war). Islamic terrorists invariably take credit for a hit, unless it isn't necessary because everyone knows who it is anyway; you don't need a phone call to figure out who's responsible when someone blows up in downtown Jerusalem. McVeigh timed his attack on the anniversary of the David Koresh debacle, so people would figure out that it was anti-federal government types. There's no clue here to link this to any particular cause.
