I thought you guys were arguing that making his tax cut permanent would do much to help the economy.

I've got a news flash for you. The President isn't allowed to cut taxes. It is a legislative thing, if you know what I mean. Does he have a role? Yes. He proposes tax cuts. Can he make it happen? Sometimes, but at other times you have a Congress that wants to obstruct.

As to tax cuts helping the economy, my belief is that cutting taxes is ALWAYS good. We can only speculate about how bad our economy would be today had Bush not insisted on Congress cutting taxes. There is little doubt it would be far worse than it is.

Al, government indeed has an influence over the economy, but it isn't the kind of influence that appears in Ted's strawman arguments. Nor is it the kind of influence Clinton took credit for when he once claimed to have invented the "New Economy."
