The bottoming of the market will predict the bottoming out of the economy by nine to 12 months. That is the key, not how many people are looking for the bottom. So when the market stops going down and gains some stable footing, and maybe even inches up a little on a sustained basis, with no apparent good news around, that is when we will know that an econ recovery is around the corner.

This happened in reverse in early 2000, thereby predicting the econ slowdown and high tech industry crash.
