Jay, re the Indians thinking their English skills are an advantage. <Oft cited is India’s advantage in terms of the number of English-speaking workers. Feroz Chand Kohli, vice chairman of Tata Consultancy Service (TCS), says, “Working in an English atmosphere is a different. China has a major disadvantage in this. The nation’s IT professionals do not think in English.” >

India is still stupidly burbling proudly on about Independence from Britain though they haven't done anything that I'm aware of that would justify such pride [though I admit that creating half a billion extra people is a good thing and second most valuable to creating knowledge]. China still celebrates the birth of China as a communist empire in 1948 [though they would do better to celebrate my birthday of the same year].

Both have still got some distance to travel [as have we all].

The problem for India is that they are in the process of ditching English as a hangover from the evil colonial masters who must be expunged from the landscape and culture. Silly Indians. They keep the bad parts and chuck out the good.

While inspecting India a few years ago, I found some young people were concerned that schools were ditching English, but as young adults, the jobs were available for those with English skills. What a surprise.

Yes, India has [or had] an English advantage over China, but they are keen to get rid of that advantage. They'll probably succeed in their aim of increasing their poverty. They can then continue to blame their poverty on the evil British who helped upgrade the joint a couple of centuries ago. But that won't put food on the table.
