I do not think it is much of an issue in a news roundup, which can hardly be expected to educate one much on issues. That is what the panel shows and documentaries are for. Also, the duty not to be an ignoramus is not a duty to be a scholar, just to be reasonably informed. In the end, without a degree of pandering, which is the "spoon full of sugar", few would watch the news, and they would be even less informed. Most people buy newspapers for the features, for example: sports, the comics, Dear Abby, and so on. But a lot of them incidentally peruse the front page, and may even read a story all the way through. That said, I agree that the pandering can get disgusting, from time to time......
