I was reading Scandalmonger today, by Safire. I don't know if you've read it, but I am really enjoying it. I read all the non-fiction stuff that came out (John Adams, Founding Brothers, etc, and I own the Dumas Malone multi-volume set on Jefferson) but Scandalmonger is real fun- it ties a lot of things together for me, in a really entertaining way. I read about the Alien and Sedition acts in John Adams, but in Scandalmonger you get a more entertaining sense (because of a compelling narrative) of what exactly they entailed.

Anyway, if you haven't read it yet, I recommend it. I found it to be great fun. I have recommended it to several people, and only one complained that it was dry. But she doesn't like histories, and she complained about John Adams being dull too. So I discount her opinion on books dealing with history, although she gives me good mystery recommendations.
