True, not even an expert would consider using a cheesy AR-15/M-16 or Mini 14 for a shot that far off. I think he was closer, and the authorities somehow overlooked something. If we were talking a Barrett or even a .308/.30-06 (i.e., 700 BDL or similar) it'd be more plausible, but like you said, many other variables come into play.

I used to shoot 1000 yd. competition, have you ever seen the size of the target, much less the 10 spot? Not to mention the time delay between firing and the bullet reaching the target...

You brought up an interesting point. Maybe the shooter is sitting in the back of the van with a gun rest and such. Maybe they've cut out a small door in the side. Pull up, take the shot and speed away. Sick!
