I don't think the same conversations would ever occur in person. Nothing like it. I remember the big party SI had in SF when SI had its anniversary party. Everyone was extremely well behaved. I didn't hear a single argument. People in 3d are different than aliases on a chatboard. You probably wouldn't need to tune anything out if the Sharks were in a big room, but it might be really boring- the party in SF sure was, but the food was great.
