The occupation story is presumably based on nytimes.com , previously posted by Snowshoe in #reply-18100817

Personally, I think it's good that they're talking seriously about this, as opposed to the previously popular glib "Democracy in Iraq" blather. I think it's also good to see some acknowledgement that there have been some problems in Afghanistan:

Officials say they want to avoid the chaos and in-fighting that have plagued Afghanistan since the defeat of the Taliban. Mr. Bush's aides say they also want full control over Iraq while American-led forces carry out their principal mission: finding and destroying weapons of mass destruction.

Not to mention the locally popular lily-pad thing, which might not work out too well in a "democratic" environment. WMD, well, it would be pretty silly to fight a war and then give it all to some random unknown new government, even if the CIA could actually come up with one.
