YOU DO NOT MAKE ONE COMMENT ABOUT THE QUOTE! This is a classic example of your "Attack the Source" method of argument. We are all on to you, John.

Geez, Bill, I can hear you all the way in northern Jersey. And I gather this post was not late at night. It's marked 7:54 PM on my computer. I assume that means mid afternoon or earlier in the outer isles.

Okay, serious time.

1. Big surprise. The Nobel's have political overtones. I'm surprised the Weekly Standard is surprised.

2. Another big surprise. The Swedes are upset at present US foreign policy rhetoric.

3. I assume they looked at this one as they looked at previous ones, the award to Russian novelists, etc., in which the award is meant to act as a criticism of a regime.

4. I've read the commentary/controversy on the quote from the chair of the awarding committing. He does seem to have stepped over a few protocol lines. But I assume that's a reflection, not only of the heat of his own views, but the heat of much public opinion in Europe. With which, best I can tell, I happen to agree.

5. The use of the term "savages" to describe some previous recipients is typical of The Weekly Standard's idea of political commentary. As I typed earlier to someone else, they seem to think the best commentary is one which finds the most hyperventilating adjective. My own preference in this crowd is your magazine, Reason. You get argument, not little boys throwing rocks and saying ya, ya, ya, you're one.

Your turn.

I have some thoughts about the mayor of New York I wish to share with you but I'll wait for a later post.
